The new features in Odoo 20 fall into three areas: AI agents that can create and update records on their own, an offline mode so work doesn't stop when the internet goes down, and deeper changes to accounting, access rights and inventory. Odoo unveiled it on September 24, 2026, at Odoo Experience. Should you upgrade? If you're on Odoo 17 or older, start planning now: standard support for version 17 ended in September 2026. If you're on 18 or 19 and your system has a lot of custom development, there's no rush—you have time to wait for the first round of fixes and upgrade with a plan.
Every new Odoo version brings hundreds of changes, and most of them won't change your week. Here we pick the ones that do affect how a small or mid-sized business works, what to review before upgrading, and how to approach it without disrupting operations. If you're still evaluating the system, start with what Odoo is.
What is Odoo 20, and how long is it supported?
Odoo 20 is the major version Odoo released in September 2026. Founder Fabien Pinckaers presented it in the opening keynote at Odoo Experience.
Odoo gives each major version three years of standard support from its release, with bug fixes and security updates. After that comes extended support, which costs extra, is only available on Odoo.sh (for some versions) and on your own server, and no longer includes security updates.
| Version | Released | End of standard support |
|---|---|---|
| Odoo 20 | September 2026 | September 2029 (planned) |
| Odoo 19 | September 2025 | September 2028 (planned) |
| Odoo 18 | October 2024 | September 2027 (planned) |
| Odoo 17 | November 2023 | September 2026 (ended) |
The good news: Odoo lets you upgrade from any version to any major version that still has standard support. You don't have to step through every version in between.
Which Odoo 20 features change day-to-day work?
From the official list, these are the seven changes a business will notice most.
1. AI agents that do tasks, not just answer questions
In Odoo 20, an AI agent can create and update records—for example, from a PDF with instructions—and it can be triggered by an automated or scheduled action. In plain terms: entering data from a document or updating records can be handed to the system, under rules you set. Accounting also gets an assistant that answers questions about the company's finances using only the accounting data in your database.
2. Your Odoo connected to other AI tools
Odoo 20 can connect to your database through MCP, an open standard AI assistants use to work with other systems. In practice, an outside assistant can query your Odoo. That's useful, and it's also one more door: decide what data it can see and which user it signs in as.
3. Keep working offline
Offline mode lets you create, edit, archive and delete records without an internet connection, and rerun searches you've already done. For anyone working in a warehouse, in the field or in areas with poor coverage, it's one of the most practical changes in this release.
4. Simpler access rights, with an impact you can't see
Odoo simplified access rights: it removed record rules (the ones that set, for example, that a salesperson only sees their own customers), and that filter is now configured directly on the access right. For users, little changes. For anyone with custom development, a lot does: every custom module that relies on record rules needs to be reviewed and adapted before the upgrade.
5. Tidier—and stricter—accounting
- Chart of accounts: parent accounts replace account groups for structuring the chart, and account codes become optional.
- Bank: every journal entry that affects a bank account must come from a bank transaction. That ends manual entries that later don't match the statement; if your team worked that way, the habit has to change.
- Reconciliation: you can set a payment tolerance and a matching order for automatic reconciliation.
- Payment statuses: they've been renamed. "In Process" is now "Paid," and the old "Paid" is now "Reconciled." Give your team a heads-up.
6. Inventory and costs without the Inventory app
You can now manage inventory on hand and its accounting valuation without installing the Inventory app, and sales orders can be shipped without it. For a small retailer or distributor that doesn't need warehouses or transfers, that's less system to maintain. And if you do use Inventory: when a product's cost changes after delivery—through a landed cost, for example—Odoo updates the delivery's value retroactively and, under perpetual accounting, the invoice cost too.
7. Prices with or without tax, and purchases that match
On sales orders, purchase orders and invoices, you can switch between tax-included and tax-excluded prices. If you sell to both businesses and consumers, you no longer need duplicate price lists. Vendor bill and purchase order matching also improved: it shows a summary of what matches, warns you about price or quantity differences, and lets you undo a bad match.
Other changes worth knowing
- Field Service is no longer a separate app; it's been merged into Planning. If you use it, check how your processes carry over.
- In Argentina: daily exchange rates pulled automatically from ARCA (the national tax authority), the informed-CBU payment legend required by RG 5762/2025, SICORE file export for income tax, and batch processing of digital delivery notes (remitos digitales).
How much does Odoo 20's AI cost?
According to the official release notes, every AI feature needs credits, which you buy through Odoo's in-app purchases (IAP). The notes don't say how many credits each task uses. Before switching on agents that run on their own, estimate how often they'll run and set a budget: a scheduled agent keeps using credits even when nobody is watching.
Should you upgrade to Odoo 20 now or wait?
| Your situation | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| Odoo 17 or older | Plan the upgrade now. Without standard support, there are no security updates. You can go straight to 19 or 20. |
| Odoo 18 or 19, with little custom development | Upgrade in the coming months, after testing on a copy. Version 18 has standard support until September 2027. |
| A lot of custom development or integrations | Wait for the first round of fixes and use that time to review your modules, especially the ones that rely on record rules. |
| You want AI to automate tasks | Run a limited test on a copy and measure how many credits it uses before you decide. |
| You're evaluating Odoo for the first time | Start on version 20: it will be supported the longest. |
One rule applies across the board: don't upgrade in the middle of a fiscal year-end close or during your busy season.
What happens to Verifactu if you upgrade?
If you invoice in Spain, your version also determines how you comply with Verifactu. Odoo has an official module, "Spain - Veri*Factu," in versions 17, 18 and 19. It's LGPL-licensed, so it works in both Community and Enterprise, and the Odoo 20 documentation lists it as well. If you're on version 16, the Odoo Community Association (OCA) maintains a module covering versions 16 through 18. On anything older, plan the upgrade and Verifactu as one project. We cover it in detail in Verifactu in Odoo.
How to upgrade without disrupting operations, step by step
- Take stock: current version, installed modules, custom development and integrations with other systems, such as your online store, banks or shipping.
- Set up a test database with your data upgraded to the new version, and work on it—never on the live one.
- Review custom development: modules that use record rules, modules that touch accounting or bank entries, and anything you can stop maintaining because Odoo 20 now handles it out of the box.
- Clean up your data before upgrading: chart of accounts, manual entries on bank accounts, duplicate products and contacts.
- Decide what to do with AI: which tasks, with which permissions and with what credit budget.
- Train your team on what changes on their screens: payment statuses, the chart of accounts, tax-included and tax-excluded prices.
- Pick a cutover date outside closings and busy season, and decide who handles questions in the first few weeks. That's what ongoing Odoo support is for.
How we help
We upgrade Odoo installations with custom development: we review every module, test on a copy with your team and stay with you through go-live. If you also invoice in Spain, we set up Verifactu as part of the same project. We handle it through our Odoo implementation and support service.
If you're not sure whether to upgrade now or wait, start with a technology assessment: in one meeting, we'll review your version and custom development and tell you which path makes sense.
